FIRST EVENT

What: Lecture, "Japanese Economy: Successful Recovery, Challenges, Foreign Policy, and US Relations" by Dr. Shujiro Urata
When: Monday, February 12, 2018, 1:45 pm to 2:45 pm
Where: Scheller College Room 102

The GT CIBER, the Scheller College of Business, and the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, in cooperation with the Consulate General of Japan of Atlanta, invite you to attend a lecture "Japanese Economy: Successful Recovery, Challenges, Foreign Policy, and US Relations" by Dr. Shujiro Urata, Dean and Professor of Economics at the Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies at Waseda University, Japan.

The Japanese economy appears to have recovered from a two-decade-long recession, having experienced seven consecutive quarters of growth. An unemployment rate of 2.7% and record corporate profits support this strong economic image. However the future of Japan remains in doubt unless it can tackle daunting structural problems like an graying and shrinking population, increasing government debt, and low exposure to the global economy.

Dr. Urata examines Japan's current economic situation identifying the problems and discussing the importance of adopter an activist international economic policy with a focus on the US-Japan relationship in order to overcome the problems and achieve sustained economic growth.

Dr. Urata is a former economist from the World Bank and has also been a research associate at the Brookings Institution.
