Prime Minister Abe Calls for Solidarity Against the North Korean Threat

Prime Minister Abe was in New York this week for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Meetings. In the New York Times<https://t.e2ma.net/click/qswkt/ymx71l/2hcv7f>, he lays out his approach for dealing with North Korea, writing that "solidarity and concerted effort among the international community, together with the effective role of the United Nations, are more vital than ever."

The busy week continued with Prime Minister Abe's UNGA Address<https://t.e2ma.net/click/qswkt/ymx71l/iadv7f>. He focused on calls for unity within the international community to address the threat posed by North Korea, and also remarked on Japan's efforts to move toward the UN's 2030 Sustainable Development Goals through a focus on Universal Health Care and Women's Empowerment initiatives.

Speaking Out Against the Abductions of Japanese Citizens by North Korea

In his address to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump discussed North Korea's abductions of foreign citizens, including then 13-year-old Megumi Yokota who was kidnapped in 1977. In Washington, D.C. last week, Megumi's brother Takuya participated in a Center for Strategic & International Studies event alongside Japanese lawmakers, including former Ministers in Charge of Abduction Issues. Championing Women's Empowerment

Prime Minister Abe also spoke at the HeforShe event<https://t.e2ma.net/click/qswkt/ymx71l/evev7f> held by UN Women for the release of their report on gender equality. PM Abe supports women's empowerment<https://t.e2ma.net/click/qswkt/ymx71l/unfv7f> and is one of ten Heads of State named as an IMPACT Champion by UN Women. In his remarks, he emphasized the importance of making societal changes from the ground up to create a world in which women can shine. Under his leadership, Japan has created the World Assembly for Women<https://t.e2ma.net/click/qswkt/ymx71l/aggv7f> - known as WAW! - to bring women leaders from around the world to Japan to find solutions to the challenges that women face.

Meeting with World Peers on Critical Topics

Japan, the European Union and the United Nations co-hosted a High-Level Side Event on “Promoting Quality Infrastructure Investments.” Foreign Minister Kono, in his keynote speech<https://t.e2ma.net/click/qswkt/ymx71l/q8gv7f>, highlighted the importance of quality infrastructure for achieving sustainable development.

The same day, Prime Minister Abe joined the discussion on Universal Health Coverage (UHC), where he outlined the many concrete steps being taken by Japan and the international community to bring health care to all. He closed his remarks<https://t.e2ma.net/click/qswkt/ymx71l/60hv7f> by saying, "our contribution to achieve UHC is an investment for the future, towards 2030 and beyond."
