[asiacouncil] Minutes from the January meeting

Good Morning:

Attached are the minutes from the January meeting. I'll sum up what I think were the major issues we talked about.

1. Asian Studies Certificate - most schools are not taking advantage of this. Perhaps the Asia Council could identify a coordinator on each campus to promote the certificate program. It doesn't have to be the Asia Council Rep. - perhaps the director of International Programs.

2. Study abroad- Currently we have two programs that allow students to register on their home campuses - Japan and China. This model works best when the director has a 12 month contract and doesn't require additional compensation. The program in the Philippines accepts students from other universities as transients to help cover salaries. There is no model to works across the board.

We talked about beginning programs in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and South Korea. My opinion is that we should try to find a committed director with a 12 month salary to lead the program the first year in case we are short on numbers. If a faculty could commit to going even if his/her school didn't pay a salary, that's another option. Both Paul and I have contacts in both places, so I don't think it would be difficult to put a program together. We need to revive the study abroad committee with people who are really interested in moving forward with this.

3. Webpage- The webpage is currently hosted at Valdosta State University and I make the updates. The European Council has purchased a domain name and has a separate page outside of the system. http://www.ecstudyabroad.net/

If we do something like this it would allow for us to update the website regardless of which school the webmaster was from. Something to think about.

4. Declining participation in Asia Council meetings - perhaps we need to ask International Offices at universities that aren't participating fully to identify representatives and support their participation. Skype meetings are also an alternative. In any event, we need participation across Georgia in order to keep the Asia Council productive.

5. The Asia Council Workshop on Korea - the members doing most of the organizing were all absent with other commitments, but things are moving along nicely. We already have number of speakers committed, including the Consul General of South Korea in Atlanta. Hopefully, flyers and registration information will be available soon. Please, please publicize this we the information is available. You can send it to your faculty listserv, international offices, students, etc.

6. Talk of reviving a faculty development seminar. We discussed using some of the money designated for faculty development that was given to the Asia Council by the state International Office before it was disbanded. Since this is what the money was designated for, it might be a good idea to use some of it for this. Paul Rodell will follow up with ideas - possible something in Vietnam or Korea.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

David Starling
