Sky Crawlers / Sukai kurora (2008)

A moody, contemplative vision of a world in which "Kildren," childlike fighter pilots who do not age and who seem to be reincarnated upon death, are contracted to wage air battles among themselves that somehow sublimate the hostilities of the adult world and keep it at peace. Director Mamoru Oshii transplants his fascination with military motifs from futuristic science fiction into an apparently early 20th century alternate history in this handsome film that also boasts sophisticated 3D CG animation. The film will be introduced by series curator Dr. Ryan Cook.
The Japan Foundation will sponsor a talk about this film by Professor Alexander Zahlten of Harvard University, who will visit Emory on November 9.

"K-ON! The Movie"

Wednesday, November 11, 2015
7:30 PM
K-ON! The Movie / Eiga Keion! (2011)

A specimen of "slice-of-life" (nichijo-kei) anime, a genre of anime that portray mundane details of everyday life with little plot development. K-ON! also features comedic and musical elements, detailing the exploits of the five members of a high school girls' music club who travel to London to celebrate their graduation. The film is an original story that elaborates on the activities of the club, following on the heels of a popular manga and television series.

"My Neighbors the Yamadas"

Wednesday, November 18, 2015
7:30 PM
My Neighbors the Yamadas / Hohokekyo tonari no Yamada-kun (1999)

Miyazaki associate Isao Takahata applies his sensibility for realistic subject matter to the slice-of-life scenery of a celebrated Japanese newspaper comic strip. Unusual for a Studio Ghibli film, My Neighbors the Yamadas emulates the comic strip format by portraying its characters' everyday lives in a series of vignettes, and in a simplified, caricatured aesthetic with an all-digital watercolor pallet.

"Summer Wars"

Wednesday, December 2, 2015
7:30 PM
Summer Wars / Sama wozu (2009)

This hit original anime feature showcases the talents of one of the most visible figures among the current generation of anime directors: Mamoru Hosoda. Hosoda's science fiction fantasy blends elements of comedic slice-of-life family portraiture and of the "sekai-kei" imaginary in which the intimate lives of adolescent characters become synchronized with the fate of the world: it weaves a highly engaging narrative about a social media network that becomes the target of a terrorist attack, transforming a family reunion into a struggle (by means of social media avatars) to avert global disaster.

Additionally, the Japan Foundation will sponsor a public talk by professor Alexander Zahlten of Harvard University at 4 PM on Monday, November 9, 2015. Zahlten will speak about Mamoru Oshii's film "Sky Crawlers," also featured in the series.
To respect the original films and preserve the color and texture of the Japanese language, all films will be presented in their original Japanese with English subtitles. Cook will introduce each film.
Emory Cinematheque is free and open to the public, and free popcorn will be served at each screening. Titles in the series are subject to change. For more information, visit

Hirokazu Koreeda, 2013, 121 min, Japan, in Japanese w/ English subtitles, Color, Blu-Ray

Ryota (Masaharu Fukuyama) is a successful Tokyo architect who works long hours to provide for his wife, Midori (Machiko Ono) and six-year-old son, Keita. But when a blood test reveals Keita and another baby were switched at birth, two very different families are thrown together and forced to make a difficult decision while Ryota confronts his own issues of responsibility and what it means to be a father. Like Father, Like Son extends the Japanese cinema tradition of familial exploration to deliver a gentle and moving story of personal redemption that playfully navigates its way through the drama.

" What stays with you ... is the unlikely shadow of loss, not least in the hearts of the boys' mothers: how can a loving child, even the 'wrong' one, be let go?"-- Antony Lane, New Yorker

I am pleased to announce that we will have many kenshi participating today who have traveled from all over the southeast region and some from outside the federation to compete in today's tournament. I would like to offer a special Thank You to Kunitoshi Arai sensei who has graciously agreed to lead today's event as the Shinpancho (Chief Judge).
I look forward to this tournament every year and from the many familiar faces I see, it looks like you do also. This is where our practice is put to the test. I encourage you to do your best, fight with the spirit that we each know we have in us. Fight with the heart of those long ago and not so long ago samurai. Most of all fight with Respect, for the judges and for your opponent. It doesn't matter the outcome of your matches. You should learn, take that experience back to your dojo to practice, and come back next year more determined.
We here at the Charlotte Kendo Club are celebrating our 29th year since Ken Strawn sensei formed the club and we are excited and honored to be able to host this wonderful event. In these many years as a kendo family we have grown and we have many members and volunteers helping to make this tournament a success. To them I say a special THANK YOU because without you, this day would not have been possible.

I wish you all Success in your upcoming events! Gambatte!!
Sincerely,
Craig Philbeck

When a warlord dies, a peasant thief is called upon to impersonate him, and then finds himself haunted by the warlord's spirit as well as by his own ambitions. In this masterpiece from late in his career, director Akira Kurosawa returns to the samurai film and to the tension between illusion and reality. Sumptuously reconstructing the splendor of feudal Japan and the pageantry of war, Kurosawa creates a historical epic that is also a meditation on the nature of power. Japanese with English subtitles. 1980, 180 min. Introduction by Hyangsoon Yi, professor of comparative literature and director of the Center for Asian Studies.

7:00 PM

The incomparable Toshiro Mifune stars in Akira Kurosawa's visually stunning and darkly comic "Yojimbo." To rid a terror-stricken village of corruption, wily masterless samurai Sanjuro turns a range war between two evil clans to his own advantage. Remade twice, once as Sergio Leone's "A Fistful of Dollars" and once as Walter Hill's "Last Man Standing," this exhilarating genre-twister remains one of the most influential and entertaining films of all time. Japanese with English subtitles. 1961, 110 min. Introduction by Masaki Mori, associate professor and assistant director of the Japanese Program, UGA.

Presented in conjunction with the exhibition "Samurai: The Way of the Warrior." This film series is generously sponsored by UGA Parents and Families Association.

William Fleming, assistant professor of East Asian languages and literatures and theater studies, Yale University, will speak in conjunction with the exhibition "Samurai: The Way of the Warrior." The Satsuma Rebellion (1877) and the rebels who died in it have been romanticized in the Japanese imagination almost from the moment they first took up arms. On this side of the Pacific, the conflict was recently freely reimagined on the big screen in "The Last Samurai," with Tom Cruise portraying a fictional American veteran who throws in his lot with the cause. But fighting alongside rebel leader Saigō Takamori was a real-life commander, fresh from America, whose forgotten story is every bit as remarkable as the one dreamed up by Hollywood. Relying on previously unexplored archival materials from collections in the United States and Japan, this talk brings to life the untold tale of a teenage warrior whose bravery and determination in battle earned him the nickname "Little Saigō."

The Evelyn Burrow Museum
Wallace State Community College
801 Main Street NW
Hanceville, AL 35077-2000

Drawing from the outstanding collection of works on paper at the Georgia Museum of Art, this exhibition will provide a history and overview of Japanese woodblock prints or ukiyo-e, literally, pictures of the floating or fleeting world. As their name suggests, these landscapes, cityscapes and scenes of domestic life were intended to emphasize the impermanence and fleeting beauty of the world around us.

This exhibition includes a number of works by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) and Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), two of the most famous Japanese printmakers. It also features other prominent ukiyo-e artists, including Hishikawa Morunobu (1618-1694), who is generally considered to have pioneered the technique with his single-color prints from the 1670s, and Suzuki Harunobu (1724-1770), who developed the polychrome, multi-block printing process that characterizes the style.

In addition, several members of the community have loaned Japanese objects and artworks to display with the exhibition. Visitors will see antique kimonos, elaborate obi, porcelain and ceremonial table wares and objects, dolls an antique tansu chest and other artworks.

The Wallace State English Department, Sigma Kappa Delta English honor society, and The Lion's Den Writing Club will host a haiku poetry contest during the exhibition. Athens, GA 30602-1502

The collection of approximately 100 works of decorative art and artifacts belongs to the Stibbert, which is in Florence, Italy. The exhibition includes swords, helmets, full suits of armor, sword fittings, bows and arrows, ink boxes and other personal items that belonged to the samurai warriors of medieval and early-modern Japan. One horizontal scroll that depicts a procession of
samurai warriors is being displayed for the first time.

Helmets feature adornments made to resemble Shinto spirits and demons, and full suits of armor are colorful and complex, with lacquer-accented metal plates and silk ribbons.

"The exhibition provides a glimpse into their lives and gives the viewer an opportunity to see the detail that went into the design of every item," said Annelies Mondi, deputy director of the Georgia Museum of Art, who has been helping to organize the installation of the exhibition in Athens.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a wide variety of interpretive programs, including:

Taking Dance Off the Stage & Into the Community
Created by Atlanta Ballet Company dancer John Welker in 2011, Wabi Sabi challenges new audiences, fosters the next generation of choreographic talent, and pushes the boundaries of ballet through the creation of new works. By seeking a collaboration of art forms, Atlanta Ballet furthers its commitment to educating audiences and inspiring the community.

Wabi Sabi takes its name from a Japanese worldview that finds beauty in the sincerity, simplicity, and integrity of the natural world. As one of the newest dance initiatives in Atlanta, Wabi Sabi combines our city's own emerging choreographers with beautiful and engaging venues for amazing outdoor performances that bring art to the people.
