<div><font face="Calibri">For those of you who have never attended, <font color="#1F497D">
i</font>t’s a small to medium size conference (depending on your perspective)<font color="#1F497D">
</font>with a good balance of scholarly, curricular, pedagogical, and program-focused sessions. One of the things I enjoy most about the ASDP national conference is that the size and structure allows for great networking among colleagues.</font></div>
<div><font face="Calibri" color="#1F497D"> </font></div>
<div><font face="Calibri">Last year, we had very good representation from the state of Georgia – ten total – and all of them presenting! (five from Perimeter College, three others from the USG Asia Council, and two from private schools). This certainly bodes
well regarding our chances of potentially hosting the conference in Georgia in 2019 (which we can discuss at our upcoming Asia Council meeting).<font color="#1F497D">
</font>Liam Madden<font color="#1F497D"> </font>and I are planning to go back, and we hope a few more Asia Council folks will, too.

<div><font face="Calibri">If you’re interested in submitting a proposal, general conference info and the CFP for 2018 is attached. Some sessions are 75 minutes, typically with three presenters, and some are 90 minutes, with as much as four, so the presentations
are typically 15-20 minutes per person (with 15 mins or so at end for Q&A). For reference, I’ve attached the 2017 program and abstracts (abstracts begin on p.20).

<div><font face="Calibri">At the 2017 conference in Portland, I organized a pre-conference Asian Studies cultural tour of Portland, primarily for USG Asian Council members, but open to any attendees from Georgia. I plan to do the same in 2018 in D.C. Attached
is the flyer for the upcoming one in 2018 and the previous one in 2017, for reference (combined into one doc). The activities will be take place on Wednesday and Thursday morning before the conference begins late Thursday afternoon with a kick-off reception
around 5pm. That way people can use Thursday afternoon to explore their own interests around the National Mall (museums, etc.) before making their way back to the conference hotel, located near a subway station. I’ll use this time to return the rental van.</font></div>
<div><font face="Calibri"> </font></div>
<div><font face="Calibri">The conference hotel says Georgetown, but it’s actually DuPont Circle (close to to Rock Creek, the border between DuPont Circle and Georgetown). I was at the conference two years ago in DuPont Circle, but a different hotel. The neighborhood
is amazing –historic houses, embassies, great restaurants, and exciting street life. DuPont Circle and Georgetown are about the two best neighborhoods in D.C. for a conference as far as enjoying the surrounding area.</font></div>
<div><font face="Calibri"> </font></div>
<div><font face="Calibri">If you’re interested in the pre-conference tour, the hotel we’ll stay at the first two nights is actually right across the street from the Korean Spa World in the Virginia suburbs (near Dulles) – see attached flyer. This will be cheaper
than staying in the city, and is convenient to some of the activities. </font></div>
<div><font face="Calibri" color="#1F497D"> </font></div>
<div><font face="Calibri">On the way into the city Wednesday, we’ll also stop at Great Falls National Park (pic below), just outside DC in a beautiful upscale historic area along the Potomac. The parking lot is literally right next to the scene below – it’s
amazing! It’s not on the flyer because there’s no room, and also because it’s not Asia related. It is, however, a convenient stop. (Last year in Portland, we also did one non-Asian activity – visiting the amazing Columbia River Gorge and Multnomah Falls!).</font></div>

<div><font face="Calibri">Let me know if you have any questions about the pre-conference component. It would be great if some of you planning to attend the conference could participate in this. I’ve always believed in taking advantage of what a city has
to offer for additional professional development (and enjoyment) when traveling to conferences.</font></div>
