Bogang, it's great that you are in a position to cover your most of your deficit from previous successful years. Will this completely wipe out your surplus from previous years?

Cheers,
David

Dear Colleagues,

Thanks for your support. We recruited and retained 14 students for this summer's China program. Eric states well on the needs for some help from the Council.

We will be $5,000-$6,000 short in this year's program operating budget. The deficit has to be absorbed using our fund in our agency account left over from previous years. This year we don't have any student sign up from GSU campuses. Based on the program policy, we will have to "eliminate"(hate to use this word) the two GSU professors who signed up to teach.

We love to keep Professor Liam Madden (from GSU-PC) in our program since he is determined to go. He has expressed his desire to take on a leadership role in this and other Asia Council study abroad programs in the near future. He will use this opportunity to continue to observe our program operation while teaching for us in order to gain more first-handed experiences. Despite our financial difficulties for this year, we are willing to share the cost of his travel and lodging in China. Anything the program and the Council can do to reduce Liam's personal financial burden will benefit our students in the China program and the program development in the Council in the long run.

I vote yes, and thanks for those who have voted so far.

I am not sure if I am a voting member, but I am in support of the support for this faculty member. It is important to continue providing students with the study abroad experience in China.

Dear council,

I support this proposal.

I was on this program last year (as way of disclosure), and consider everything about the program as top notch. Liam was also outstanding as teacher and colleague, and a student favorite.

Dear Fellow Council Members,

Bao Gang has requested that the Asia Council help support the travel expenses of Liam Madden to China this summer. The program’s student enrollment is lower than expected. In order to keep the number of courses offered for students at the advertised cost, Bao Gang is requesting that funds from the Asia Council faculty development grant be used to pay toward Liam’s airfare. In addition, and if a faculty member is taken out of this summer’s program, it is likely more students will withdraw from the program once they learn their preferred courses are not available. A lack of student retention would also jeopardize the program budget.

This expenditure would also be seen as faculty development. Liam can learn how Bao Gang operates the program. Liam would then be able to be a director of a future Asia Council program. I spoke with our treasurer, Salli Vargas, and confirmed there are funds in the agency account that can be used toward this cause. She recommends putting $1,000 toward the $1,200 airfare. There would remain $7,000 in the account to be used toward faculty development workshops, including the one this spring at Perimeter’s campus.

In the spirit of transparency and collegiality, could you please send me your vote by no later than Monday? Bao Gang needs to determine what to do with the program.

Many thanks,
