Drexel University and the Mid-Atlantic Region Association for Asian Studies announce the call for papers for the 46th annual conference. This year’s conference theme is, “Mobility, Technology and the Environment in Asia.” The contemporary development of new technologies and the rapid pace of mobility of people and products have an impact on cultures, societies, and the environment. This conference promotes a discussion of Asia within the broader context of mobility and technology, and the environmental impact of these.

We encourage proposals from any discipline, and welcome participation from faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students, independent scholars, and professionals. A keynote address will be delivered by Laurel Kendall, a past AAS President (2016-17), who is Chair of the Anthropology Division at the American Museum of Natural History and Curator of Asian Ethnographic Collections. Dr. Kendall is also a Senior Research Fellow at the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University.

To propose a panel, individual paper, or poster presentation, please create an account on our website (maraas.org) and follow the instructions for proposal submission. Proposal deadline is May 22, 2017. Please send any other inquiries to the Conference Chair, Dr. Rebecca Clothey (Rebecca.a.clothey at drexel.edu<mailto:Rebecca.a.clothey at drexel.edu>). Acceptance notices are expected to be sent by June 15, 2017. Travel assistance for graduate students and international scholars up to $100 is available on a competitive basis. Graduate students and international scholars should request travel support (of up to $100) by emailing Treasurer Evan Young at youngw at dickinson.edu<mailto:youngw at dickinson.edu> AFTER submitting their proposal on the website. Further information on the conference is available on maraas.org (click on “Conferences”).

Graduate students may also enter their work in the Graduate Student Prize competition. The prize includes $500 and the opportunity to present on a special panel at the national AAS conference in 2019.
