Most the cities on the west coast have nice Japanese Gardens, but the one is Portland is widely considered the BEST outside of Japan. There is also an excellent Classical Chinese Garden - much more a rarity than Japanese Gardens in the U.S. - and it's fantastic. The Oregon Legacy Nikkei Center is also worth seeing. In addition to Asian sites, there's Powell's City of Books (maybe the best in the world; definitely the largest), and just outside Portland, the iconic Columbia River George and Multnomah Falls. If other faculty from the Asia Council go, perhaps I can take them around, too.
I've emailed the conference director for electronic flyers of the conference that she gave out in March, and I'll bring those to the Asia Council to distribute. In the meantime, you can forward the message below. I'm including the program from the 2016 conference in case people unfamiliar or who've never been want to get a better idea of what the conference is like.

Theme:
To study Asia is to study connections. Whether from a broad historical lens that examines the movement of peoples and ideas or an analysis of a narrowly-defined contemporary issue, connections can be found as causes that explain and contrasts that inform. The 2017 ASDP National Conference invites papers from faculty and students in the humanities and social sciences that explore this theme of Asian connections. Beyond seeking diverse views that illuminate connection within Asia and beyond, we welcome proposals that explicitly address approaches to connecting presented knowledge in Asia with students.
